Abstract

It is a study in the field of the history of Ukraine relating the first quarter of the 18th century during the Proot war according to the information available in Ottoman Turkish written sources. There are considered the reasons for the said war, and namely – the defeat of Karl XII’s army and that of Hetman Ivan Mazepa in the Poltava battle against the army of Moskovia’s ruler Peter І, which significantly aggravated the situation of both the Sweden ruler himself, and the situation of the Ukrainian Hetman Ivan Mazepa. To avoid the threat of getting captured the above said leaders emigrated to the Ottoman Turkey. In the above mentioned written sources that we have studied there are fixed data showing that the High Porta government valued the town of Khotyn as a strategically important facility within the defense system of the northern frontier of its state, and particularly – in terms of setting up control on the Ukrainian land having been freed from their occupation by Moscovia. The work also includes an analysis of ‘the Ukrainian problem’ in the context of the military and political relations between Ottoman Turkey and Ukraine during the time of ruling by Pylyp Orlyk.
