Abstract

The article deals with the description of a small collection of Arab Christian manuscripts preserved at the Manuscript Institute of the V. I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine. The majority of these manuscripts (five items) are liturgical books used in the Orthodox Church. They were selected for the present study on a thematic basis. Four manuscript books (Epistle book, Octoechos, two Horologions) date back to the 18th century and originate from various localities of Palestine. The ownership statements show that these manuscripts were donated to the renowned church of Saint George in Lod (Lydda). Each of them carries an endowment inscription by the hand of the head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem Archimandrite Antoninus (Kapustin) who gifted them to the library of the Kiev Theological Academy in 1868. This group of manuscripts exhibits common characteristics in text decorations and graphic features probably related to a certain local tradition. The fifth manuscript has been for the first time identified here as the General Menaion (it is mistakenly referred to as the Hieratikon in the catalogue of the Arabic manuscripts collection of the V. I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine, No. 65). Its origin remains unclear, since it has neither scribe’s signature nor ownership statements. It seems quite different in appearance from a Hieratikon mentioned in the previous descriptions of the Arabic manuscripts (not found in the actual collection). The present contribution completes and corrects the data found in the previous surveys of the above-mentioned Arabic liturgical manuscripts and provides in detail their codicological description and contents, including all chapter titles, scribal colophons and ownership statements in Arabic original and Russian translation.
