CONSTRUCTING THE WILL OF GOD: THE INTERPRETATIONS OF AL-MĀ’IDAH: 33–34 IN MEDIEVAL AND MODERN QURANIC EXEGESIS

Abstract
The article is devoted to the analysis of approaches to the interpretation of the verses al-Mā’idah: 33–34 in medieval and modern Quranic exegesis. The major attention of the author is focused on the issues of rational textual argumentation that was used by the Muslim commentators to establish the essence of the crime and the specific features of implementation of the range of corporal punishments mentioned in the ayah. Following the analysis of the treatises of medieval exegetes (al-Tabari, ibn Kathir, al-Razi) as well as modern authors (S. Qutb, A. A. Maududi, M. Shafi), it is concluded that view of the verse as prescribing punishment for highway robbery presents the result of the constructive work of the jurists and not a clear cut statement of the Quran.
