Abstract

The work “Essay on the development of Sufism ( تصوف ) until the end of the 3rd century of the
Hijra” by A. Krymsky, one of the founders of Russian and Ukrainian academic Islamic studies of the 19th – early 20th centuries, appeared in 1895. It marked a new (classical) stage in the development of research on the nature of the origin of Islamic mysticism (Sufism), one of the most complex phenomena in Islam. A. Krymsky, developing the ideas of Western European Islamic studies and relying on a significant source base (Arabic, Persian, Turkic, European sources), critically revised the idea of Sufism abandoning anachronisms and prejudices, quite convincingly investigated the origins of Sufism and its spread around the world. The work is a classic example of the evolution of European (Russian and Ukrainian) Islamic studies on the nature of the origin of Sufism, and its ideas determined further ways for Sufism research until the end of the 20th century. This work remains today a bibliographic rarity.
